Lowes 395166 GE Electric Dryer with Reversible Door

GE 7 cu ft Electric Dryer with Reversible Side Swing Door.  Lowes Item #395166 and General Electric model # GTDP490EDWS.

We’ve had two older versions of this GE model so I was excited when I saw it go on sale. Delivery guys were amazing, changing out the dryer cord to a 3 prong as my house is older and did not have a 4 prong cord. I needed to replace my dryer quickly and ordered it online Friday night and it was delivered Sunday at 10am! This is a basic dryer, replacing the ancient one I had – great value for the money! I am very pleased! They also reversed the door for me to make it more convienent to use. Dryer works GREAT! Clothes dry in no time. No wrinkles and I can’t hear it running which is great.  The only negative to the entire dryer is the quality of the door; it’s not made as well as my old one, but then again, there’s nothing made as good as the old ones from 15 years ago. Other than that I got every feature I could possibly need without spending a fortune.

Don’t assume you should replace your dryer if you buy a new washer. But if you’re in the market for a new one, a moisture sensor is a must. It automatically stops the machine when the laundry is dry. Of the dryers tested by Consumer Reports, the best are both capable and quiet.  Dryers are pretty basic and differ mostly in size and features. Your space constraints will probably dictate the types of clothes dryers you can consider purchasing. While washers have become more efficient in the past decade, dryers haven’t changed much. Their major differences are how they heat the air (using gas or electricity) and how they’re programmed to shut off once the load is dry (thermostat or moisture sensor).  Gas dryers cost about $50 to $150 more than comparable electric models, but the likely savings in fuel costs should more than make up the difference in the long run. An electric dryer requires a 240-volt outlet and a gas dryer needs a gas hookup and a 120-volt outlet.

GE is an industry leader in laundry centers. GE’s latest models provide an exterior drying rack, allowing you to hang clothes to dry, a permanent rack within the dryer, and reverse tumble. Prices will range from $320 to $1,000. Remember, don’t pay for unnecessary extras. Higher-priced dryers might offer a dozen or so choices, including specialty cycles such as “speed dry” (15 minutes of high heat, for example). These can usually be replicated with standard settings. A choice of heat level, timed and auto-dry, and a few fabric types (regular/cotton and permanent press/delicate) is usually plenty. Touchpads look impressive and might allow you to save custom settings but don’t improve performance.
