Lowe’s will begin selling Craftsman tools and other products in 2018, the company announced October 25th. Expect to see the Craftsman brand in Lowe’s stores around Memorial Day or early summer.
Hand tools and power tools will be available in Lowe’s stores in the U.S. and Canada as well as online. Stanley Black & Decker purchased Craftsman from Sears Holdings earlier this year in an agreement valued at roughly $900 million including cash and planned annual payments on new sales.
In a statement, Stanley Black & Decker CEO James Loree said, “We intend to invest in the brand and rapidly increase sales through these new channels, including retail, industrial, mobile and online. To accommodate the future growth of Craftsman, we intend to expand our manufacturing footprint in the U.S.”
Where Do Craftsman Tools Fit In At Lowes?
Craftsman is among the best known American brands ever. It was first sold by Sears in the 1920’s and remains a favorite among auto mechanics, homeowners and professionals. Craftsman is still sold in Sears stores and on its website.
Sears Craftsman tool line, uses a “good, better, best” structure, with the “Craftsman” brand usually as the good and best tier and “Craftsman Professional” as the highest tier. Craftsman Professional and Craftsman Industrial are marketed as being comparable to brands like SK, Snap On, Mac, and Matco.
The standard Craftsman line would be comparable in quality to other mid-price store brands. This would include the Lowes Kobalt tool line and the Husky tool line at Home Depot.
The purchase by Stanley Black & Decker provided the right to sell Craftsman products for up to 15 years.
Although the brand has remained one of Sears’ best-selling categories, sales have slipped as the department store retailer loses customer traffic and closes stores.
Will Lowes Honor The Craftsman Lifetime Warranty?
That detail has yet to be confirmed. The lifetime warranty coveres hand tools, not power tools. Most likely, Lowes will honor the lifetime warranty, though they may offer repair kits or service instead of immediate replacement. Sears has been doing this for about the last 5 years also.
Most Craftsman hand tools are advertised as having an unlimited lifetime warranty. This lifetime warranty program started in 1927. This warranty program requires no receipt or dated proof of purchase. If the owner takes the item into a local retail store, it may be replaced or repaired free of charge. In some cases, such as ratchets, the customer may be offered a repair kit with which to repair the item or an already refurbished item.
Craftsman power tools have a one-year warranty.
What About Kenmore Appliances?
Sears has also lost ground with its other major brand: Kenmore appliances. While Sears will continue to sell Craftsman products, the company announced it would stop selling Whirlpool appliances since the companies could not agree on pricing. However, Sears will continue to sell Whirlpool-produced Kenmore appliances.
Kenmore’s market share has slipped from over 40% 20 years ago to around 12% today as younger generations overlook the Kenmore brand that their parents and grandparents had in their homes. Sears will be selling Kenmore appliances through Amazon and connecting them to the e-commerce Alexa voice platform.
I think its only a matter of time until you see Kenmore appliances at Lowes or Home Depot. When that happens, it will certainly be the final chapter of Sears.
