Ever wonder what Lowes employees have to say about Lowes.  Hourly wages, work and personal life balance or job security? How about vacation time, sick pay or even how to apply for open positions? How much does an hourly employee make? What kind of salary does a department manager, assistant manager or store manager make at Lowes?

I am a department manager at Lowes and I’m very satisfied with my career at Lowes.  My store manager is one of the best I’ve ever worked for in retail. He is fair, open, a great communicator, coaches well, and praises us at the appropriate times. Does he ever make mistakes or change his mind on something? All the time, but that is how we all learn the Lowes way.

I have learned alot from his merchandising abilities and a sense of urgency and priority of projects.  I smile and greet everyone I see with a friendly smile and help them find what they need. I’ve learned almost every function at the store from how to use the register, cutting mini blinds, mixing paint, receiving product, making keys and selling a deck package.  The other managers I work with are very helpful and really respect all the workers and they are always making sure everybody is trained and learning new things.

I learned alot about retail and leadership from some great managers and things not to do from some poor managers. I worked my way up from being a part time cashier at 20 years old to becoming a Department Manager by 23, so there is definitely advancement opportunity.

To those who decide to join Lowes my advice to you is to work hard, learn all you can about the different departments and make sure you are fully trained. To be truthful Lowes is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys retail and wants to become a manager.  Just make sure that your managers are looking to help you grow also! Lowes  has it ups and downs but mostly ups for me.

I really like it here but have to say its hard work.  Yes, you will work your butt off and see others sit on theirs… but those people are not around very long.  Believe me when I say that hard work is appreciated and rewarded at Lowes.

I love working at Lowe’s, but it really can depend on the store’s location, and the store’s management team. To begin with, you have to like retail to work in a “big box” store. There are many different personalities of co-workers and customers to consider when deciding to work for Lowe’s.

Working for a large corporation is similar to being in the military, they want you to give them your all! If you are willing to do that, and also accepting of many changes along the way, then Lowe’s is the place to work.  You actually get paid to socialize, shop and talk with every customer.

Here are some areas I always look at to judge my happiness at my job.

Respect: I have found that mutual respect is the most important and is a two way street. The easiest way to get respect from your supervisors and peers, is to earn it. Most managers and associates respond favorably to respect. People with respect issues usually don’t last long in this business.

Benefits: It’s not just about how much you make an hour at Lowes.  Wages are at or above other retailers, but consider insurance benefits, vacation and sick days, stock options, 401K, etc… These are all pretty good, but remember, benefits do not pay the bills…

Job Security/Promotions:  Lowes really doesn’t lay people off.  They do hire seasonal employees, whose employment may last anywhere from 30-120 days, so job security is pretty good.  Getting a promotion is somewhat harder. I believe it’s up to the individual to make yourself more valuable than someone else.

You really don’t have to be the best at what you do, but keep improving and don’t get frustrated. If you fail to get that promotion, find out why.  Ask questions and learn from it.  You can progress into management, if you are willing to work longer hours and manage people,or you can stay an hourly associate.  It’s totally up to you and what you want.

Wages: I know employees all across the United States.  The following wages are typical for Lowes.  Expect slightly higher in major markets like New York, Boston, or Los Angeles. Expect a little lower wage scale in rural markets or areas where there is no close direct competition like Home Depot.

  • Cashiers, Loaders, Service Desk, Receiving, Stocking.  $8-$10 an hour.
  • Full time associates-any department. $10-$14 dollars an hour.
  • Department Managers. $12-$16 dollars an hour.
  • Assistant Store Managers. Salaried positions 55 hours a week.  $35,000-$50,000 a year.
  • Store Managers. Salaried positions. 55 hours a week.  $48,000-$70,000 a year.

Management: Store management at Lowes can sometimes be hit and miss. There is a store manager and usually 3 or 4  assistant managers, and then department mangers below them. Reality is that the assistant managers run the store and while most are competent, others not so much.

Basically, to those of us working the floor, you will know very quickly if an assistant manager is someone you can trust. A good assistant manager could do anything in any department, which is actually a huge undertaking and takes a lot of skill and intelligence.

About Lowes:  Lowe’s is the second-largest hardware chain in the United States, behind The Home Depot and ahead of Menards. Lowe’s is also the worlds second-largest hardware chain, behind The Home Depot and ahead of the European stores B&Q and OBI. Lowe’s is committed to rewarding the hard work and dedication of the employees who have helped them get to where they are today.

Lowes offers an industry-leading benefits program that includes comprehensive medical, dental, vision plans as well as life insurance plans, flexible spending accounts, disability benefits, 401(k) options, and an employee stock purchase plan.

Lowe’s benefit program includes health and dental plans, flexible spending accounts, a vision plan, sick pay, vacation, paid holidays, disability, life insurance, prescription drug plan, accident plan, nsurance, and a part-time employee medical plan. There is also a retirement plan which includes a 401 (k) and a stock purchase plan.

Lowes employees are a great group of people. Yes, I really do enjoy my job and coming in to work everyday! So if working for a company that has a great attitude toward its employees, good benefits and a lot to teach about home improvement, sounds like your kind of place, go ahead and apply today!  I would love to see you in the aisles of Lowes someday!
