Best means different things to different people. Some people are looking for best-selling riding mowers or tractors, while others seek top-rated models.  Before we get into best selling models of riding mowers and garden tractors, it is important to know what the difference is and what you can expect to find at Lowes.

Riding lawn mowers or lawn tractors, can handle larger yards of more than roughly half an acre. They can tow light yard trailers and accept some small implements. But  their lighter frames still mean their primary role is for cutting grass. Their smaller cutting decks and overall size make them great for city, suburban or country use and for yards where a push mower just takes too long.  These machines generally start at around $800 are very easy to operate.

Garden tractors start around $2,000 and go up to over $5,000. They are built on heavier-duty frames and usually have more horsepower than riding mowers. They have larger cutting decks, often with multiple blades. Their wheels are larger, they have heavier axles, and are built for heavy-duty work in addition to mowing grass. Garden tractors can easily mow up to 5 acres and can also accept add-on implements to be used for tiling, plowing, grading and snow removal.

Garden tractors at Lowes are “Light Garden Tractor” or referred to as compact or LGT design.  In the last few years several manufactures like Husqvarna, John Deere, Craftsman, Ariens and Cub Cadet have started using the LGT design for retailers like Lowes and Home Depot.  They are basically the little brother of the real garden tractors you will only find at independent dealers. Lowes models generally use a garden tractor frame but a riding mower transmission.  If you want to check out the heavier duty versions of the Husqvarna or John Deere tractors you will only find them at your local dealer.  Yes, you will get a tractor that is the “big brother”, but be prepared to spend $3000-$6000.

For me the best machines are easy to handle, safe to use and are a great value. They should be easy to start, low maintenance and keep your lawn looking good. As a lawn and garden manager at Lowes, I’ve sold hundreds of mowers through the years and seen them all-good, bad and somewhere in between.
Remember, the garden tractor models you see at Lowes will be different than what you will find at independent dealers. All riding mowers and tractors should provide good visibility and excellent mobility around trees, flowerbeds and other landscape. For yards in the one-to-three acre range, consider a zero-turning radius model. And look for a mower with at least 14 hp and a wide mowing deck of at least 38 inches to get your lawn work done quickly.

Happy mowing
